For us, sustainable management also means helping new technologies to make a breakthrough – particularly technologies that contribute to the achievement of a cost-effective, reliable, and environmentally friendly energy balance. In such cases, we go on ahead to prepare the ground, particularly when it comes to opening up new areas of product technology for the mobility of tomorrow.
For example, we have developed various concept vehicles for different markets. Our region-specific vehicle fleet currently includes automobiles for the USA, China, India, and Europe. The Gasoline Technology Car developed by Schaeffler and Continental shows how networked integration of key mild hybrid technologies can generate fuel savings of up to 17% and therefore a reduction in CO2, even with an already very efficient passenger car with a low-displacement three-cylinder gasoline engine such as the one used in the basic vehicle, a Ford Focus 1.0l EcoBoost.
As a company geared towards the future, Schaeffler invests significant amounts in research and development. Approximately 6,400 employees work at 16 research and development centers worldwide. For example, bearing components continue to have potential for significant improvements in performance and efficiency while reducing lifecycle costs. With our "X-life" range, we develop premium products with a high power density that ensure significantly longer operating life with the same operating conditions.
Schaeffler has installed charging stations for electric vehicles at its Herzogenaurach and Schweinfurt locations and has also purchased several electric vehicles for its car pool. Electric vehicles from the company's vehicle fleet and business partners' vehicles can use these electric charging stations. Schaeffler is thus continuing its efforts in promoting the responsible use of energy to its employees, customers and business partners and, at the same time, it is making the company's standpoint on electric mobility clear.
For the Schaeffler Group, consistently ensuring the highest uniform levels of quality assurance and product safety across all fields of application is part of the standard that must be fulfilled in order to make Mobility for tomorrow possible: In both urban and long-distance transport, and with low emissions and high energy efficiency.
For this reason, we have a comprehensive quality management system in place at every location, which operates according to state-of-the-art principles. Successive changes were made to this system many years ago, as a result of which it is now based on measures to prevent rather than detect errors. Quality management is a dynamic process at Schaeffler, which is inspected on a daily basis and therefore continuously improved, and is certified according to DIN-EN ISO 9001:2008 and ISO/ TS 16949:2009.
We are aware of our responsibility towards our customers, consumers, and employees, and carry out our obligation with regard to ensuring product safety with the utmost care. Our product safety management system is emphasized by our product safety policy and is an integral part of our development and manufacturing processes.
We understand that ensuring the integrity of product safety is not only an internal mandate – as a responsible manufacturer, we also see it our corporate duty to understand the consumer requirements of our customers with regard to safe products and to consider these in our processes. In addition to our own initiated "product safety network" we are involved in significant specialist associations.
